The first miracle of Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ – The first miracle

The first miracle of Jesus ChristOn the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.  When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

“Dear Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.

Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.

The above was the passage form John 2:1-12. The church, in general, takes this to be the first miracle done by Jesus, that is the miracle of turning water into wine. If you ask any Christian they will always claim that this is the first miracle by Jesus Christ.

The first public miracle of Jesus Christ

I believe this was not the first miracle performed by Jesus. Jesus Christ was the Son of God, of virgin birth and from there I would assume that in private, among his family members, he would have performed many miracles. This is the reason Mary, the mother of Jesus tells Jesus “They have no more wine.” implying that he was to do something about it. I would assume that the shops were closed or they were too far away for anyone to purchase more wine and return in time at that hour.  Also Jesus and his disciples where invited guests at the wedding and hence they had no part in the wedding arrangements nor in organising the wedding.  This means that his mother had not expected him to go out and buy more wine. She wanted him to perform one of his miracles.

This is the reason I believe that the miracle of turning water into wine was Jesus’s first public miracle.

How Jesus Christ Obeyed the Ten Commandments

The other point you will notice from this miracle is that Jesus replies to his mother “Dear Woman, why do you involve me? My hour has not yet come.” This shows that Jesus knew the timing of his destiny but he obeyed his mother.

I take you back to Moses’ time, the time of the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments states “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”. To obey the Lord God you have to obey the Ten Commandments. Jesus had to obey the Ten Commandments hence he had to honor his mother in this public place. He could not dishonor her even though his time had not come.

What is it about the Ten Commandments that it is very important that we obey them? They were so important that Jesus himself obeyed them.

I quote Exodus 20:16-19 “On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled. Then Moses lead the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. Mount Sinai was covered with smoke because the Lord descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, the whole mountain trembled violently, and the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder. Then Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him.”

And God spoke the Ten Commandments to Moses.

The reason the Ten Commandments are very important is that they were given to Moses directly from the Lord God. They were not given through an angel of God but directly from the mouth of the Lord God.  And this is the reason Jesus did not disobey his mother.

Belief and Faith in Jesus Christ for miracles

The other point I would like to make about the first public miracle of Jesus is that there has to be obedience to Jesus and faith in Jesus for miracles to occur. Firstly, Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. This shows that the servants were obedient to Jesus’s every word. Secondly, he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They took the water to the master of the banquet in faith that it will be wine. Faith is the point where belief is acted upon with obedience.
